Throw Back Thursday – Portrait Session | The Skalla Family

Okay… So I am going to try and get through this one without any waterworks… (lucky for me you can’t see me.)

The amount of LOVE I have for these three humans is really indescribable… (here we go…haha)

The woman you see here is one of the most amazing people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing… (there are many people who would line up behind me to sing her praises… so you don’t have to take it from me)! You may recognize her, she is one of my very best friends and my photography business partner. Of all of the adventures we have had together, I can say hands down, watching her journey into motherhood as been the most exciting!! Khristi and Bryce were really made to be parents… you know they say when you are a super awesome people… it is really your duty to make tiny humans!!

Featured first…their maternity photos. These were taken back in January at The Farm at South Mountain.

That brings us to March when this tiny little spectacular soul entered the world and stole my heart!!! Here is Jett Alan… can you handle it?! So sweet and perfect and handsome!

for this last one… a little about daddy. When we met Khristi & Bryce, he and I became fast friends. He is a true kindred spirit. He works hard, lives his life to the fullest and loves and cherishes his wife in a way that makes me love him all the more… and then he became a daddy…and took it to a whole other level.

oh and one more thing… we snuck in a gender reveal shoot (and I do mean snuck in… like “hey lets do this after work today”.)

Throw Back Thursday – Portrait Session | Nate & Leanne

Good morning y’all.

Has it been 11 months since my last post? Boy oh boy! It turns out 11 months can go by in a flash, but I promise I didn’t fall down a rabbit hole… I am still here!! In honor of my accidental hiatus, I thought I’d do a little Throw Back Thursday and reveal some of the RAD sessions I have had over the last year (but kept all to myself… again accidentally).

Lets start with this gorgeous couple!!
I was so excited when Leanne told me she would love to take photos at the county fair. We were super lucky the fair was in town the week we wanted to shoot… and it was a good thing too, since Nate & Leanne welcomed little Poppy Lynn into the world April 17th, just one week after our session.

I am so happy for these love birds!! They are so devoted to each other and chasing their dreams, and now they have a beautiful little lady to share it with!

Happy 4th of July

Good morning!!

Incase you have ever asked yourself … does a photographer’s child and closest friends have gobs and gobs of pictures taken regularly … the answer is YES! In some cases I don’t even give you much of a choice… as was the case with this session.

Inspiration comes from so many places! The little Bug and I were taking a stroll and saw an adorable dress in a store window and the rest is history… We tried it on, took it home and proceeded to call my Bestie and advise her of a date and time I needed her girls dressed and ready for a photo shoot.

Here are some of my favorites … We had so much fun! There is no greater joy than photographing people you love! Especially when they are so amazingly adorable and full of personality!

I present to you (in their fourth of July best) Brixton, Sammie and my little Bug

(thank you Crystal for indulging me yet again xo)

portrait session | Murtagh Family {featuring nap time craft teepee}

Good morning!

I am hoping this is the first of many times I write to you about a craft that makes it into a photo shoot!

First let’s start with the good stuff… little Frankie! What a dream boat, (and his parents are pretty fantastic too of course.) I had an opportunity to photography Danny, Emily and Frankie again, as part of Emily’s extended family photo shoot… here is how their portion went! (note the adorable teepee… more on that in a minute)

We had so much fun with this shoot! The sun was setting in the beautiful AZ desert and we found just the right spot! The camera loves Frankie!

Emily and I had gotten together earlier to have a play date with a another mommy friend… and I had a bright idea that we should all make teepees! (I’ll pause while you laugh at this notion) True it was an ambitious goal… 3 babies, 3 mommies, 3 teepees… but hey DREAM BIG right?! As it turns out we only got through Frankie’s teepee that faithful day, but I am so glad we did it!

Here is my little Bug testing it out after it was finished…

Image

How did we do it you ask?

The first one we made a smaller scale due to the amount of fabric we had on hand… (purchased from IKEA) and since Frankie is a little tyke we decided we could just make it a smaller scale. A few days later I made one for the Little Bug, slightly larger…. here it is!

Image

What you will need…

  • 5 tall thin sticks… shown here are thin bamboo sticks that measure about 5 feet, purchased from a garden center… a pack of 6 was about 4$ (not bad)
  • any size flat sheet (bedding) If you have one you like from home even better! I purchased this one on clearance. (It has adorable little white stripes… and oh how I do love stripes!) Material can also be purchased once you determine the size of your teepee… but having done it both ways, I’d say I recommend a sheet. It was super handy to use the already sewn edges as often as possible when cutting out your pieces.
  • you’ll need a sewing machine
  • some thread, some twine, a piece of chalk and a sewing measuring tape (I suppose any measuring apparatus will do)
  • and about and hour… I think friends, a cup of coffee and good music also help any project, but I will leave that up to you

How to put it all together…

  • Before we start, please know… there are many ways to go about this. I found dozens of tutorials online, ranging from super simple to some where advanced mathematical and sewing abilities were needed. So we decided to just make it up as we go
  • so… first… get 5 of your sticks and simply build a teepee like structure. I recommend not doing this on a slippery wood floor… those silly poles will slide all over the place (thank you Brooke) Once the configuration of poles resemble a teepee structure, grab some of your twine and secure the top… you can see this if you look closely at the yellow teepee photo. You are basically just wrapping the twine around the area where all the poles meet and then around each pole tightly to hold it all together.
  • Next, take a close look at the structure and do your best to make all of the “openings” even
  • now to make the panels of fabric… using your measuring tape, measure the distance between the poles… I first measured between all of the tops of the poles, wrote the measurements down (about 2 inches), added them up and divided by the number of openings to get a good average… this will help determine the top measurement of your fabric needed for each panel… repeat for the very bottom or large distance between poles. You will then need to add between 1.5 to 2 inches to all of the sides for allowance… For example if the teepee top pole distance average is 2 inches, and you want to add 1.5 ” to each side, the top of your fabric panel will be 5″ wide… (the 2″ opening plus 3″- 1.5″ x 2)
  • you will then measure the height of your teepee from floor straight up to the point where you want your fabric to end on top. you will have to eye ball this… (do not measure along pole… since it is at an angle your measurement will be off) you want actual height
  • now you are ready to make your panel template… lay out your sheet/fabric… get your chalk and start mapping out your panels.. (don’t forget to add allowance)… fold fabric in half… then along the fold… simply measure out the height /length first (mark it), then the distance of the top opening at one end, then the bottom opening at the other and connect them with a line (using chalk) … then cut … TA DA
  • repeat until you have all panels, or use the first one to cut the others … keep in mind you will need one panel to be the entry way or door… you can do this easily by simply cutting up the middle of one of the panels… about 1.5 feet from the top and sew a hem along each cut side.
  • Once you have all of your panels cut… start sewing them all together (wrong sides touching)!
  • then if needed sew a hem around the entire top and entire bottom before next step.
  • keep whole tepee inside out and then sew in about 1.5 inches from each sewn side edge, top to bottom, to create a tube or pocket that the poles will slide through to form the structure…
  • now slide poles in and ENJOY!
  • PS I also added tie backs for the doors.

Your teepee is now ready for hours of fun! If you can figure out how to keep your toddler from knocking it down daily… Resulting in mommy setting it back up (groundhog day) please pass that info along!
Happy Crafting !

portrait session | Suzanne & Elizabeth

Good Day to all of you in Blog Land.

Boy oh boy, 3 months can go by in a flash… I am still here… not to worry!!

Today I am featuring my beautiful friend Suzanne and her little lady Elizabeth. I’ll have you all know, that if you come to visit us from Oklahoma and have a sleep over… I may drag you to the park so that I can photograph your cuteness!!! We had so much fun catching up and running around… the visit was too short indeed (aren’t they always), but we captured some goodness! ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

portrait session | Murtagh Family

Please welcome our newest little friend Francis (Frankie) Murtagh! So in love with this little man!

Oh, yes… also featured Frankie’s proud Mommy & Daddy … To say we are super excited for our friends to join the madness and magic of parenting would be a huge understatement! Emily & Danny are long time friends of my little family and 2 of the most loyal and wonderful people you will ever know!

We had a great time taking these photos, so much joy & laughter (even though we were all freezing).

portrait session | O’Rourke Family

It is a great privilege as a photographer to be able to photograph people you love and care about… you’ll hear me say this often, mostly because its true, but also because when I get excited about something, I tend to repeat myself.

This next family was no exception… it is great fun when your Best Friend needs photos… and not only is this an amazingly attractive group, but also I LOVE LOVE LOVE these children!

Crystal is an amazing woman… she works hard and plays hard as they say, she runs a successful design business (C3 interiors) and juggles the joys of motherhood all while going to school!

When Joey isn’t spending time with his 3 ladies, you can find him making people beautiful with his art at Chosen Art Tattoo in Glendale, follow him on Instagram.

portrait session | Meadows Family

Happy Monday everyone!

Over the Holiday I had the pleasure of taking family pictures for my oldest & dearest friend.  I have known Lola since we were 9 years old… which blows my mind…  after all of these years she is much more than a friend… she is my family!

For the first time since we were kids we live down the street from each other!! Which is super Rad and very convenient for photos… I can not believe that the last time I photographed her beautiful daughter Alexis she was 9 months old. Where does the time go! Lola, I am so happy for you and the beautiful family you have created!!

Happy 2013 & The Crim Family…

Can you believe it is a new year already? How exciting! I sure do love the feeling of a new beginning and the sense that anything is possible… and while each new day and every passing moment gives that opportunity.. there is just something about the New Year that gives it a SUPER power kick!!

Gearing up for years end, I sure did keep busy with all of the magic and wonder of the holiday season (more on that later) … Naturally my adventures included capturing lovely images for so many beautiful families, and now that all of the holiday cards have been sent and the decorations packed away, it is time to reveal some of this seasons favorites. (this may take a few posts)

{The Crim Family}

My darling Hubby and I have been friends with these 2 lovelies for years (over 13 actually, wow!), my how life has changed. We were lucky enough to join their little family up North at their cabin.. we had such a blast, complete with snuggles, laughs, smores and of course we had to sneek in some family photos!!

Mickey & Nicola, it has been such a blessing raising our little families together… Emma & Jett are amazing little people… and so much fun to hang with for pictures!! (not to mention the little Bug is in love with them) Thanks again!
